After now fifty years of experience with a grey water navy comprising of mainly frigates and a Baltic Sea navy with fast patrol boats the German Navy combines both experiences with its new K130 class corvettes in order to match with the future challenges. The ships combine size and endurance necessary for world-wide deployments with the capabilities required in littoral environments. The demands of network-centric operations will be met as well as the necessity to operate in high-intensity scenarios short of war, supporting joint forces operations ashore from the sea.
Starting as a design competition in 1998 the development and procurement contract was awarded to
ET Marinesysteme in December 2001. ET Marinesysteme acts as system integrator to a ship yard consortium of Thyssen Krupp Marinesysteme and Lürssen, with ATLAS ELEKTRONIK/EADS and Thales as major subcontractors for the development and delivery of the combat management suite.
The CMS is based on the proven SEWACO FD concept, which is used aboard more then 65 vessels by 12 nations. Evolving from the F124 program and K130 program current technology is incorporated into a modern CMS.

The CMS controls all sensors and weapons. It provides a tactical picture compilation based on sensor information and information received by the communication and link system. It is able to compute the threat evaluation and engagement plans based on a rule set generated by tactical and operational needs.
The K130 offers for corvette-size ships unprecedented C² facilities. Real-time comprehensive situation awareness will form the basis of the tactical evaluation and decision process.
The integration of the NATO (MCCIS) Maritime Command and Control Information System and state-of-the-art tactical data link systems provides the ship’s command with a full recognized common operational picture, enabling the ship to participate in today’s joint and combined operations equal with navy ships of frigate and larger size.
Automatic message processing provides the C² system with real-time updates of the tactical situation and enables the command team to quickly react and participate in the command process.
The new NATO Collaboration at Sea (CaS) suite facilitates real-time information exchange and online collaborate planning usíng state-o-the-art features like battle force email, white-boarding and chatting.
Online participation in the Navy's logistic information system and internet/navy intranet connectivity using satellite communications complete the network integration.
